Arcana es un proyecto de investigación sobre la antigua cárcel de Valparaíso, cerrada en abril de 1999. Conformado por un film (largometraje), un libro y un sitio web, el proyecto busca recoger el modo de vida que existía al interior de la prisión durante su último año de funcionamiento.
En su conjunto, constituye un homenaje al lugar, a los valores y costumbres de los hombres que por ciento cincuenta años lo habitaron . Es una invitación a transitar, desde la perspectiva de un ser externo, a través de las diferentes instancias de vida existentes al interior del recinto.
El desafío consiste en comprender aquello que se presenta más allá del límite que, de manera infranqueable, separa lo externo de lo interno. El respeto hacia ese mundo oculto es el principal aprendizaje del trayecto y, al mismo tiempo, la única manera de relacionarse y acceder a él.
Arcana is an investigative project focusing on the old prison of Valparaiso, which closed down in April 1999. The project consists of a film, a book and a website and its objective is to capture the way of life within the prison during its last working year.
It is a homage to the jail, to the values and customs of the men who lived in it for 150 years. It is an invitation to transit within the prison from an external perspective.
The project’s principal challenge is to understand that which lies beyond the boundaries which subtly divide the outside world from the inside. The principal lesson learned from the project is the importance of respect as the only available means of accessing and relating to this hidden world.
